Perry Stafford
Perry4 Stafford (William1, Robert2, Starling3) Born January 1836 in Indiana, probably in Morgan County;1 died 19 June 1912 in Smith County, Kansas.2 Perry Stafford left Indiana as a child and headed west to Iowa with his mother and her relatives after the death of his father, Starling Stafford. Iowa became a Territory of the United States in 1838 and did not become a state until 1846.3 Perry's maternal grandfather, Samuel Elliott was listed the first federal Iowa Territorial census in 1840.4 Since the 1840 census does not list the members of the household by name it is not known if the youngest boy and the two youngest girls, who lived with Samuel Elliott were his Stafford grandchildren.
Perry Stafford like his sisters was named in the court documents resulting from his father's early death.5,6 By 1850 his mother had married, Joshua Holland as was already widowed. She lived in Augusta Township in Des Moines County, Iowa.7 Sarah Holland's household leaves more questions than answers. The 42-year-old woman is the head of a household that consists of 14-year-old Persae [sic], who is listed as a female. Did the census taker make a mistake -- is this really Perry Stafford? Harriet Stafford is listed as 6 year old and her age is expected to be about 16 years old. There is the 2 year old girl named Clarisa? Whose child is she? Then there is the 22 year old Joshua Holland. Was he the son from a previous marriage of her husband Joshua Holland?? Research is needed to try to answer these questions. Further evidence that this Sarah Holland is the same woman as the mother of Caroline, Harriet and Perry Stafford is the fact that Elbina Murray, who was probably her granddaughter was enumerated in her household in 1860.
The Burlington Hawk Eye, a newspaper published in Burlington, Iowa provides evidence that Joshua Holland left Iowa for California in the spring of 1849 and died later that fall from a serious case of dysentery and diarrhea.8 The same newspaper also mentions that Jacob Elliott and Perry Stafford also left Iowa and traveled in the same group as Joshua Holland. This suggests that these men, all from Des Moines County, Iowa probably knew one another and were probably connected to Sarah Stafford Holland nee Elliott, mother of Perry Stafford. The length of time that Perry Stafford remained in California is unknown. By 1860, the 24 year-old Perry was back in Des Moines County, Iowa. He and his 30-year-old sister, Caroline Murray, lived with Kilburn and Clarinda Scott in Flint River Township.9
The next 10 years of Perry Stafford's life remains undocumented at this time. It is possible that he stayed with Caroline Stafford after she married Alexander Elgin and moved to Walnut City in Appanoose County. By 1870 Perry Stafford is still living in Caroline and Alexander Elgin's household.10 It is possible that this is where Perry met Margaret Isabell Logan, who he married on 12 October 1871.11 Perry and Bell Stafford remained in Iowa for at least 5 years according to the 1880 census, which lists his youngest child as Hattie C. Stafford and describes her birthplace as Iowa.12 Research in the census records for Perry Stafford indicate that once he arrived in Smith County, Kansas he continued to live there for a period of at least 20 years. In 1880, Perry's occupation in Smith County was described as livery man;12 in 1885 the Kansas State census listed the family in Smith Center and Perry's occupation was described as farmer;13 10 years later in 1895, Perry, a merchant and his wife, Margaret, were still enumerated in Smith Center, Kansas with 4 of their 5 children still living in their household;14 the last census listing Perry Stafford was the 1900 census.15 Again he was enumerated in Smith Center. The census taker listed his occupation as farmer in 1900. Information received from another researcher, Barbara Herring indicates that Perry died in Smith Center, Kansas on 19 June 1912.16 After his death, his widow continued to live in Smith Center. According to Barbara Herring she died on 10 February 1931.16 Suggested research for further studies:
