Rebecca J. Stafford4 (William1, Robert2, Andrew3) was born on the 18 December 1834 in Indiana.1 She was the daughter of Andrew and Mary Stafford nee Lang.2  All evidence concerning her parents indicate that they remained in Morgan County during her childhood.  She was 11 years old when her father died leaving her mother with 5 young children to rear.3  Rebecca did not marry until she was 22 years old.  Then she married William J. Reeves in Morgan County, Indiana just 6 days prior to her mother's marriage to William Cox.4

It may be that Rebecca's husband William J. Reeves was the driving force behind the family's westward migration.  William and Rebecca Reeves left Indiana shortly after their marriage in 1859 and were in southeastern Kansas.  The voter lists for 1859 and 1860, published in The Emporia News, list William J. Reves [sic] as an eligible voter for that Lyon County.5  The reason for William and Rebecca's return to Indiana is not known, but one may speculate that life was not easy in the early days in Kansas Territory.

Although, they returned to Indiana after the sale of the Lyon County, Kansas farm they eventually went to Harrison County, Missouri and were there in about 1874 to 1880.6,7  Sometime between 18807and 19008 William and Rebecca Reeves went to Woods County, Oklahoma Territory.  They sold two parcels of land situated in Harrison County, Missouri in 1883, the first in May9 and the second in October.10

Additional research is needed on this family to answer questions such as:

  • If so, did they obtain land through a homestead claim?  Ten years after the sale of the Missouri land they purchased land in Red Willow County, Nebraska, however, Rebecca's brother and sister, Daniel and Rose Ann, were in Decatur County, Kansas and Red Willow County, Nebraska, respectively in 1884.  Although no deed was found for purchase of land in either Missouri or Nebraska for them they may not have recorded the deeds or they may have obtained the land from the sale of Federal lands.

  • When did they leave Red Willow County, Nebraska to go to Oklahoma Territory and why?

This boy was not listed in any census record for William and Rebecca Reeves.  According to information from a descendant of Benjamin F. Reeves, this boy was born 31 August 1858 and lived only 5 days, dying on 05 September 1858, probably in Kansas.  The 1900 census states that Rebecca J.
