Rose Ann Stafford and her husband James M. Adams
70. Rose Ann4 Stafford (William1, Robert2, Daniel3) Born 05 February 1839 in Morgan County, Indiana;1,2 died 06 June 1926 in Hiteman, Monroe County, Iowa;1 married James M. Adams on 23 December 1854 in Morgan County, Indiana.3 She was the 3rd child of Andrew and Mary Stafford neé Lang.2 Rose Ann's father died when she was only 6 years old l.4,5 After her father's death, Rose Ann lived with her mother in Morgan County2 probably until married James M. Adams when she was 15 years old.3 They continued to live in Morgan County for almost 20 years.6,7 Sometime shortly after 1870,4 Rose Ann and James migrated west to Harrison County, Missouri where they were enumerated in 1880.8 They did not go to Missouri alone. At nearly the same time her sister's family, William and Rebecca J. Reeves,9 and her mother, Mary Cox10 also went to Harrison County too. The route and mode of their transport to Missouri is not documented. It is possible that they traveled in a wagon caravan together or they may have taken a train to Harrison County. The reason for their move is not known; whatever the reason, they all surely hoped for a better life in Missouri.
By 08 October 1875, James M. Adams purchased a tract of land containing about 65 acres of land near Cainsville, Harrison County, Missouri.11 Rose Ann and James were the parents of 9 children.8 Five of their nine children were born in Indiana and at least 2 of them were born in Missouri. One child died as an infant and its date of birth and death have not been determined. The birthplace of Rebecca Jane Adams is uncertain because there is conflicting information in the records. The 1880 census taker reported her birthplace as Missouri,8 but her baptism records list Indiana.12 Further research is needed to determine which is correct.
Another unknown, is the date that James Adams died. There is documentation that narrows the time of his death between 01 June 18808 and 17 May 1885.13 On this date Mrs. Rose Ann Adams married William Remington in Red Willow County, Nebraska. This marriage record documents that Rose and like her brother, Daniel, and sister, Rebecca, too went to the western part of Nebraska. Records show that Rosanna Adams purchased a homestead in Red Willow County, Nebraska on 18 October 1884.14
Rose Ann's life would get complicated in Nebraska. She met and married William Remington in Red Willow County, Nebraska on 17 May 1885,13 but this marriage would not last long. Just 9 days after her marriage to William Remington, Rose Ann made a deed of the homestead land to her children. This Donation Deed was filed in Red Willow County, Nebraska.15 Only two years after her marriage to William Remington, Rose Ann was disillusioned. By 1889 she no longer lived with Remington and in 1890 he filed for a divorce from her. The judge granted a dissolution of the marriage on 09 June 1890.16
Apparently, Rose Ann returned to Harrison County, Missouri where her mother still lived and resided with her mother until Mary's death in 1904.5 After her mother's death, Rose Ann lived with her various children in different parts of the U.S. At the end of her life she went to Monroe County, Iowa where her daughter was living. Rose Ann died on 06 June 1926 in Hiteman, Monroe County, Iowa.1 |
