Benjamin Barnard Stafford & wives

51.  Benjamin Barnard Stafford 4 (William1, Robert2 Benjamin2) was born about 1847 in Morgan County, Indiana.1 He was the 7th child of Benjamin and Margaret Stafford.2  He apparently died before 1910 or 1911 according to his brother, Grant S. Stafford's obituary.3  The date of his death has not been determined at this time.

After returning home from military service during the Civil War,2 he married Miss Cyntha Ann Ware on the 18 April 1866.4  Benjamin enlisted as a private in Company K of the of the 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment, Indiana on 23 November 1863.5  This is the same unit that his older brother, William H. Stafford, was in.  He mustered out on the 10 January 1866.5  His pension index card indicates that he also served in the 21st Indiana Infantry.6

After the Civil War Benjamin B. Stafford, Jr. returned to Morgan County, Indiana to his new wife, Cyntha Ann.  They were enumerated there in 1870.7  Research is needed to determine if Cyntha died or if they divorced.  The Morgan County, Indiana marriage records indicate that Benjamin married a second time to a woman by the name of Susan M. Dooley on 02 February 1877 in Morgan County.8

In 18501 and 1860,9 Benjamin Jr. was living in his father's household.  The only census record showing him in his own household was the 1870 census.7  He and Susan have not been located at this time in either 1880 or 1900, however, there is evidence that he remained in Morgan County since his 8 year old son, Benjamin C. Stafford was buried at the Centerton Cemetery following his death which occurred 03 December 1892.10
