Grant S. and Miranda Stafford nee Fultz

59.  Grant S. Stafford 4 (William1, Robert2 Benjamin3) was born in October 1848 in Morgan County, Indiana.1 He was the 8th child of Benjamin and Margaret Stafford.3  He died in Morgan County, Indiana on the 18 January 19104 or 19115 and was buried in the Centerton Cemetery in Morgan County, Indiana.  There is a discrepancy at this time for the year of his death.  The cemetery marker says 1910, but the newspaper which published his obituary was labeled January 1911.  In addition, both Grant and Miranda are listed in 1910 in the census,6 which was enumerated on 15 April 1910 suggesting that the obituary label may be more correct than the cemetery stone.  The cemetery marker appears to be a replacement as its style is more modern than a stone expected for one who died in 1910 or 1911.4 According to his obituary, he died of a heart attack.5    He married Miranda Fultz5 in Morgan County, Indiana on 04 November 1868.7 They continued to live in Morgan County for the rest of their lives.  There is one period of time which they have not been located and that is in 1880.  They do not seem to appear in the census in 1880.  More work is needed to determine if the indexing is incorrect and therefore makes finding them difficult.

When the young couple was just starting their married life together, Grant's occupation was described as a farm laborer.By the time of his death, he was a well known stock buyer in Morgan County. They were the parents of 8 children, 2 preceded them in death.

Suggestions for additional research:

  • Follow children forward

  • Obtain new copy of obituary for Grant Stafford - checking the date the newspaper was published and to complete the citation.  This should clear up the discrepancy between the cemetery marker and the newspaper.  In addition the 1910 census visit to their home was made 20 April 1910, which indicates that the death year is incorrect on the cemetery marker.
